On the other end of a heartbreaker

The Reds lost last night in the only appropriate way to end a game with so many ups and downs: a two-run walk-off homer. The bad Bronson took the mound for the Reds, giving up 4 runs in just 4 2/3 innings. They got all those runs back in the sixth thanks to poor Marlin defense, making Arroyo ineligible for the loss he should have been stuck with.

The rest of the game was pretty exciting thanks to a 3-run double by Andy Philips, who got a start at third in place of Edwin who still had some elbow swelling after getting beaned two nights ago. The Reds worked hard to get back in the game, including Javier Valentin reaching base on a dropped third strike and Jerry Hairston Jr. (who else?) hustling out an infield single which scored Jay Bruce, giving the Reds the late lead. The game was blown however in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs when Francisco Cordero gave up the walk-off to (brief) former Red Cody Ross.

Ross and fellow former Red, Jorge Cantu, are dominating the Reds this series. Last night, Cantu hit his third homer in just two games, but also allowed the Reds to stay in the game with his less-than-stellar defense. The Reds, who have quite a few walk-off homers themselves, had to deal with a heartbreaking defeat on cowbell night at Dolphin Stadium. Cowbell night. I'm just glad Junior didn't hit 600 last night. I wouldn't want his 600th homer highlight to be tainted with the sound of freakin' cowbells.

The bigger picture of this loss is that the Reds don't win yet another road series. They can come out .500 if they beat the Marlins today and tomorrow, but if they want to contend, this team needs to be able to win on the road. Hopefully Harang will be able to get some run support this afternoon and get back on track, because the Reds' success depends on his success. I thought for sure this season would be Harang's Cy Young year (or at least get a vote), but it is not turning out that way. Volquez maybe?

that was such a good game until the end. i agree about the horse shit cowbell night. seriously miami? like anyone needs that obnoxious sound that will ferrell and christopher walken made so popular, which i'm sure was uttered all over that stadium yesterday. florida is a tough team but i think we'll pull it together with volquez and maybe even cueto. get you some PHILLIPS!
